Leeds has a proper spread when it comes to wedding venues: a country house resort out at Rothwell, an Art Deco ballroom in the city centre, a boutique hotel with an orangery, a smaller lodge hotel between Bramley and Pudsey, and a golf club with a function room over the course. I'm a Huddersfield mobile DJ and Leeds is well within my patch, so this is what I'd tell any couple about the rooms, and what to check before you book. To be clear, it's a guide to venues I can cover, not a list of gigs I've done.
Oulton Hall is a four-star country house resort out at Rothwell, with wedding suites that take up to 220 guests. As a bigger resort it runs more than one space for weddings, so there isn't just one fixed room every couple ends up in.
Because Oulton Hall has multiple suites, the first thing worth asking is which one your wedding's actually booked into and where the dance floor sits within it. A resort this size can look very different depending on guest numbers and time of year, so get that confirmed rather than assuming, along with where the DJ setup goes relative to the floor.
The Queens Hotel sits right in Leeds city centre, an Art Deco building with a ballroom that seats up to 450 and fifteen event spaces across the venue. It's a grand setting, high ceilings, real character, the kind of room built to make an entrance feel like an occasion.
A ballroom that size, in a building that old, raises two questions worth asking early. First, how the scale of the room affects sound, since a big Art Deco space can carry an echo a smaller room wouldn't. Second, what load-in and parking look like, since getting gear into a busy building in the middle of Leeds is a different job to a venue with its own car park at the door.
Woodlands Hotel is a boutique venue at Gildersome, with an Orangery space that holds up to 250 guests for a wedding.
An orangery is mostly glass, which changes how a room sounds and how it's laid out compared with a standard function room. Worth asking whether the DJ setup sits near the glass or away from it, and whether the hard, reflective surfaces typical of that kind of room have been factored into where the speakers go.
Corn Mill Lodge Hotel sits on Pudsey Road between Bramley and Pudsey, with civil ceremonies for up to 85 guests and evening receptions for up to 110.
That's a much smaller number than some of the venues on this list, and a smaller room needs a different approach to pacing than a 450 seat ballroom. Worth asking how the room's laid out for the evening, where the DJ fits into a space that size, and what the power supply looks like near that spot.
Horsforth Golf Club has a function room overlooking the putting green, used for wedding receptions alongside its usual club business.
Golf clubs tend to be straightforward as venues go, but check the basics rather than assuming. Ask what the room's normally set up for, whether there's a stage or fixed area for a DJ, and what sockets are available nearby, since club buildings can vary a fair bit room to room.
Around Holbeck, there are converted warehouse venues making the most of the city's industrial buildings if you want something with more of an edge. Yes. Leeds is well within my usual area alongside Huddersfield and the rest of West Yorkshire, so any venue in the city is one I can get to and set up in.
It depends more on the room booked than the venue itself. A big city centre ballroom and a smaller lodge hotel need different approaches, but both work well once you know where the floor and DJ setup are going.
Some do, especially older or grand buildings like the ones in the city centre. It's not something to worry about, just something to ask about early so the setup gets planned around it.
As soon as you've got a date and a room booked is ideal, so there's time to confirm power, curfew and layout with no surprises in the run-up.
